2027 Courses You Can Study at UFS with an APS Less Than 25 | University of the Free State

Choosing a university course can feel stressful, especially if your APS (Admission Point Score) is below 25. The good news is that the University of the Free State (UFS) offers several study options that students with lower APS scores can still apply for. These programmes are designed to provide access to higher education and help students build the foundation needed for further studies.

If you are worried that your APS might limit your choices, this guide highlights some of the courses at UFS that require an APS of around 20–25 or less, based on the 2027 undergraduate prospectus.

Understanding APS at UFS

Before exploring the courses, it’s important to understand how APS works at UFS.

The university calculates your APS using your six best academic subjects from the National Senior Certificate (NSC). Points are awarded based on the percentage achieved in each subject. For example:

  • Level 7 (80–100%) = 7–8 points

  • Level 6 (70–79%) = 6 points

  • Level 5 (60–69%) = 5 points

  • Level 4 (50–59%) = 4 points

  • Level 3 (40–49%) = 3 points

Life Orientation can add 1 extra point if you score 60% or higher.

In general, UFS requires a minimum APS of around 20 for some entry-level programmes, although each course may also have subject requirements.
